Agenda Item #42
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grant "Accelerating the Common Core through Teacher Networks"
The purpose of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Grant "Accelerating the Common Core through Teacher Networks" is to challenge organizations with robust teacher networks to accelerate the impact of their efforts to support Common Core implementation. Through this funding opportunity, the BMGF seeks to reach hundreds of thousands of teachers across the United States to provide resources necessary for implementing Common Core State Standards. Brevard Public Schools' (BPS) proposal will provide art, media, music, and physical education teachers the opportunity to participate in meaningful content specific collaboration and networking through collegial circles, in turn driving the Common Core State Standards shift. This shift aligns with the BPS vision to "serve our community and enhance students lives by delivering the highest quality education in a culture of dedication, collaboration and learning." The Art, Media, Music and Physical education (AMMPed) Teacher Network project will enable these teachers to collaborate in new, innovative and meaningful ways. Eight district level resource teachers who serve as curriculum specialists will recruit 24 AMMPed Teacher Network leaders (six from each discipline) and in turn scale-up to over 400 network teachers in these four discipline areas across the district. The project goals support teacher recruitment, implementation of a summer institute, and formation of collegial circles all designed to build a strong network by creating a positive impact on instructional practice and student achievement.
The grant application was due to the BMGF on April 22, 2013 and was submitted with Dr. Binggeli's approval. Upon notification of funding, a board agenda item will be submitted for acceptance of the award. A complete copy of the proposal is available in the Grant Development office.
Approve the writing and submission of the 2013-2015 BMGF grant application.
