Agenda Item #32
Contract to Provide Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training
Brevard County Public Schools will contract with the Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc. (CPI) to provide consulting and training to 150 school and district personnel. Current CPI trainers will be trained in advanced CPI courses to renew their instructor certification. Basic CPI instructor training will be offered to recommended personnel to replace instructors who are no longer in the district. Once trained, each of the instructors will continue to conduct district and school-based trainings as required in the 2011-2012 Exceptional Student Education Policies and Procedures (SP&P) document in accordance with Florida Statute, section 1003.574 and in the Brevard Public Schools Reasonable Force document.
Provide four different CPI trainings to school and district personnel:
Basic Training - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training Program. A four-day, 28-hour instructor certification program with a core philosophy of providing the best care, welfare, safety, and security at times when staff members must address disruptive or even violent incidents. It gives proven strategies and skills to safely and effectively respond while balancing the responsibilities of care.
Advanced Training - Trauma-Informed Care: Implications for CPI's Crisis Development Model. A three-day, 21-hour training program that examines the influence of trauma on behavior and offers strategies and staff approaches to promote a culture of care that is trauma informed and person centered for all stakeholders, including family members who support those in care. With a better understanding of the function of behavior, those who have experienced trauma can be better served.
Advanced Training - Autism Spectrum Disorders: Applications of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training. A three-day, 21-hour training program that will enhance your ability to tailor Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training to address the unique needs of staff who support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. (Two sessions will be offered.)
Advanced Training - Enhancing Verbal Skills: Applications of Life Space Crisis Intervention. A three-day, 21-hour training program that will enhance your communication skills, focusing on nonverbal communication, verbal interaction, deescalation strategies, debriefing practices, and relationship building.
The district will purchase CPI training materials for training including participant workbooks and training DVDs.
Approve the Contracted Services Agreement to provide CPI training to district-wide teachers and Certified Instructors working with students with disabilities.
