Agenda Item #15
Space Coast Transit Joint Use Agreement-May 1, 2016 through April 30, 2017
Florida Statute 1006.261 authorizes the use of school buses for certain public purposes including but not limited to providing for the needs of the transportation disadvantaged. The Space Coast Area Transit authority (SCAT), traditionally provides services to Brevard transportation disadvantaged as a function of the Brevard County Commission. During the summer break, SCAT does not have sufficient resources to provide the Brevard County Parks and Recreation department with the appropriate amount of transportation support for their county-wide disadvantaged youth summer programs. In March, 1995, the District approved and entered into the first Joint Use Agreement with the Brevard County Commission to provide school buses to transport disadvantaged children only during the summer break in support of the Brevard County Parks and Recreation summer programs. The Joint Use Agreement delineates the specific terms of joint use between the School Board of Brevard County and the Space Coast Area Transit. The agreement expires every three (3) years. Under this agreement, District buses are used to transport children to various water park attractions, the zoo, bowling, movies, and recreational parks, all within an approximate two (2) hour travel time. The School Board is reimbursed for expenses by the Brevard County Commission for all resources provided.
Approve the agreement with Space Coast Area Transit and authorize the Chairperson and Superintendent to execute this agreement.
