Agenda Item #25

District Application for Florida Learn and Serve Grant

Brevard Public Schools was awarded funding in the 2009-2010 school year through the competitive Florida Learn and Serve District Infrastructure Grant.  As a result of being awarded funding, Brevard is now eligible to apply annually for five renewal periods through a non-competitive process.  In years two and three, we may apply for up to $50,000 each; and, in the final three years, we may apply for $20,000 each year.  In year one, the district was awarded $42,483 to support service learning projects, including a part-time adjunct teacher position to implement the grant activities in the district, twenty-one mini-grants issued to classroom teachers, and summer training opportunities for teachers.  The renewal application will continue to support the adjunct teacher position, which will exist only for the first three years of the grant.  In addition to the adjunct teacher position, the grant will also provide for online teacher training, mini-grants to support team projects and individual teacher projects in schools, and curriculum development for service-learning courses at the middle and high schools level.

The match requirement for this grant application is 100%.  This match requirement will not impact the BPS operating budget, as the source of the match will be met by in kind contributions.  This application does not require a commitment for personnel or future expenditure of funds beyond the grant period.

The grant application was due in Tallahassee on May 14, 2010.  In order to expedite the receipt of these funds, the application was signed by the Superintendent and mailed to the Florida Department of Education on May 11, 2010.

A copy of this grant will be kept on file in the Office of State and Federal Projects.

Approve the writing and subsequent submission of the Florida Learn and Serve District Infrastructure Grant application for the Brevard Learn and Service:  Building Partnerships for Service-Learning Project in the amount of $50,000.
