Agenda Item #27

Title
School Based Applications for Florida Learn and Serve Grant

Discussion

The goal of the Florida Learn and Serve Program is to engage K-12 students in service activities which apply academic curricula to improve student performance, provide for civic engagement, and career exploration.  Twenty-three Brevard schools have applied for school-based grant funds to support service learning projects for the 2009-2010 school year.  Three schools will apply as Renewal Projects, and 20 schools will apply for Pilot Project funding.  Attached is a detailed list of schools, requested funding, match required, and a brief description of each project.

These grants do require matching funds of cash and/or in-kind services of 33%, 50%, or 100% based on the school's history of receiving Learn and Serve Funding.  The match requirement will not impact BPS operating budget, as each school has identified within their application the source of the match from local funds, donations, and/or in-kind contributions.  None of the applications require a commitment for personnel or future expenditure of funds.

All submissions were due in Tallahassee on May 15, 2009.  In order to expedite the receipt of these funds, the applications were signed by the Superintendent and mailed to the Florida Department of Education on May 12, 2009.

Copies of each grant will be kept on file in the Office of State and Federal Projects.
