Agenda Item #26

District Application for Florida Learn and Serve Grant

Brevard Public Schools is completing its third and final year of a non-competitive Special Initiatives Grant from Florida Learn and Serve. To continue to support service learning activities in the 2009-2010 school year, Brevard will apply for the District Infrastructure Grant, a competitive grant.  If awarded, Brevard will be eligible to apply for five, one-year renewal periods through a non-competitive process.  The first three years of funding are $50,000 each, and the final three years are $20,000 each, for a total funding possibility of $210,000 over six years.  In year one, the funds will be requested to pay for a part-time (0.5) resource teacher position to implement the grant activities in the district.  This position will exist only for years one, two, and three of the grant.  In addition to the resource teacher position, the grant will also provide for teacher training, including a train-the-trainer model and mini-grants to support individual projects in schools.

The match requirement for this grant application is 100%.  The match requirement will not impact the BPS operating budget, as the source of the match will be met by in-kind contributions.  This application does not require a commitment for personnel or future expenditure of funds beyond the grant period.

All submissions were due in Tallahassee on May 15, 2009.  In order to expedite the receipt of these funds, the application was signed by the Superintendent and mailed to the Florida Department of Education on May 12, 2009.

A copy of this grant will be kept on file in the Office of State and Federal Projects.

Approve the writing and subsequent submission of the Florida Learn and Serve District Infrastructure Grant application for the "Brevard Learn and Serve: Building Partnerships for Service Learning Project" in the amount of $50,000.
