Agenda Item #22

District Application for Florida Learn and Serve Grant

In Brevard’s third and final year of the Special Initiatives grant we will continue to foster service learning projects throughout our district by focusing on teacher training and the development of quality projects in the classroom.  In our first two years we concentrated on three projects, Cascade Tutoring, Collegiate High School and the National Board Certified Leadership Project.  This year we will continue to support all three projects, but will work to create more ownership at the school level to ensure sustainability.  This year our funds will be concentrated in the National Board Certified (NBCT) Leadership project and mini-grants to support school-level efforts.  The NBCT Leadership Project will focus their efforts on training teachers and developing a plan for sustainability in the district.  The mini-grants will be issued to individual teachers to begin or continue quality service learning projects.  A portion of these funds will be reserved for projects in the Cascade Tutoring model and those at the Collegiate High School sites.  By localizing these projects, we hope to increase teacher interest exponentially and ensure sustainability.

The match requirement for this grant application is 100%.  This match requirement will not impact the BPS operating budget as the source of the match will be met by in-kind contributions. This application does not require a commitment for personnel or future expenditure of funds beyond the grant period.

This non-competitive RFA was due in Tallahassee on May 16, 2008 and was submitted with Dr. DiPatri’s signature on the DOE 100A.  In order to expedite the receipt of these funds, the application was signed by the Superintendent and mailed to the Florida Department of Education on May 14, 2008.

A copy of this grant will be on file in the Office of State and Federal Projects.

Accept the submission and subsequent grant/award of the Florida Learn and Serve Special Initiatives renewal application, Brevard Learn and Serve: Project HOPE and Learning in the amount of $48,669.
