Agenda Item #47

Title
Gifted Add-on Endorsement Program

Discussion

Brevard County has a very successful Add-on Certification Program in Gifted Education approved by the Dept. of Education with validity period July 1, 2003 - June 30, 2008.  This program is offered as a service to instructional personnel and is fee-supported; participants pay $165 per course to cover the direct costs of an instructor and a textbook for each participant.  Instructors are Brevard County teachers, with the exception of one Orange County consultant in the past two years, who hold Gifted certification, have been trained as instructors, and have at least three years of experience teaching in the Gifted program.  We provide a two-year schedule of classes for planning purposes of our teachers, offering at least three and usually four of the five Gifted Endorsement Program courses each year.

Data show that we have offered twenty individual classes in the Gifted program from 2003 to the present; 93% of the participants successfully completed the courses, exceeding the program standard of at least 85%.  Participants rated the relevance and usefulness of their classes very highly; from 98-100% stated that they obtained essential information, the courses met the objectives, they learned the elements of success in the program, and the classes met their needs for professional growth.   Through this quality program, schools have been able to add 147 certified teachers of Gifted students to their staffs in the past five years; in 2003 we had 95 certified Gifted teachers and in 2008 we have 242 certified Gifted teachers.  The Office of Certification and Professional Development looks forward to continuation of our successful program.
