Florida Learn and Serve Individual School Renewal and Grant Proposals


The goal of the Florida Learn & Serve program is to engage K-12 students in service learning- school and/or community service activities which apply academic curricula-to improve student performance, provide for civic engagement, and career exploration.  The following descriptions provide an overview of the Learn & Serve projects for each school:


  • Endeavour Elementary – Renewal request is for a Butterfly Project for primary grade levels and Reading/Math Intervention project for 5th and 6th graders.
  • Viera High School – Renewal request is for a Reading and Math tutoring project
  • Jackson Middle School – Renewal request is for a Literacy Project with the Gibson Center Head Start Program
  • Tropical Elementary – Pilot grant request is for a Canine Commandos project.
  • Indialantic Elementary – Pilot grant request is for a project designed to increase the student/community awareness of the Indian River Lagoon.
  • Suntree Elementary – Pilot grant request for a project designed to meet the educational needs of students within the school and improvised students in schools around the world.

These grants do require matching funds of cash and/or in kind services as follows:


Renewal of grant for Jackson and Endeavour are 100%

Renewal of Viera is 50%

Pilot projects for Tropical, Indialantic, and Suntree are all 33%


The match requirements will not impact the BPS operating budget as each school has identified within their application the source of the match from local funds.  None of the applications require a commitment for personnel or future expenditure of funds.


Copies of these grant applications are on file in the Office of State & Federal Projects.


Approve the writing and subsequent submission of 6 Florida Learn and Serve Renewals and Grant applications for the following schools:

·        Renewal for Endeavour Elementary in the amount of $8,703

·        Renewal for Viera High School in the amount of $7,500

·        Renewal for Jackson Middle in the amount of $6,199

·        Pilot Grant for Tropical Elementary in the amount of $7,500

·        Pilot Grant for Indialantic Elementary in the amount of $3,550

·        Pilot Grant for Suntree Elementary in the amount of $2,680


All submissions were due in Tallahassee on May 16, 2008.   In order to expedite the receipt of these funds, the application was signed by the Superintendent and mailed to the Florida Department of Education on May 14, 2008.
