Agenda Item #40

Title
Title X, Part C Education for Homeless Children and Youth Competitive Grant

Discussion

The purpose for this item is to get approval for the submission of the Title X competitive grant for 2014-2015 Title X, Part C Education for Homeless Children and Youth Grant, for the third year. This grant assists the district in meeting the McKinney-Vento Federal Laws to uphold the rights of homeless students in the district.

The Florida Department of Education Commissioner of Education, Pam Stewart, granted permission for districts to apply for this competitive grant on April 16, 2014.

The grant allocation of $80,000 will provide: (1) case management through contracted services; (2) necessary supports for homeless students to fully participate in school, such as hygiene items, school supplies, and shoes; (3) supplementary transportation costs; (4) assistance with accessing health care needs, (5) as well as a contribution toward the salary and fringe of the district homeless liaison and, (6) travel costs for liaison to required meetings to assist in accessing additional resources including state level conference on homelessness.

In order to expedite the receipt of these competitive formula funds, the application will be signed by the Superintendent and mailed to the Florida Department of Education to meet the grant deadline of May 30, 2014. If the grant is awarded, a "Consent after Information" agenda item will be submitted for Board approval at a subsequent meeting.

A copy of the 2014-2015 Title X, Part C Education for Homeless Children and Youth competitive grant will be available in the Department of Students At Risk.
