05-28-2019 Board Workshop-Work Session
The School Board of Brevard County, Florida met for a Rule Development Workshop and Policy Work Session on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida. Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Eagle newspaper on Thursday, May 16, 2019 and Thursday May 9, 2019. The affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

4. Board Policy 5120 Assignment with the District

Ms. Archer presented this policy and explained that eventually it will be combined with 7120.
5. Board Policy 5121 Controlled Open Enrollment

Stephanie Archer, Assistant Superintendent of Equity, Innovation and Choice went over a PowerPoint presentation. Eventually, the intent is to combine policies 5120 and 7120.
There was a type in VI(B): change implement to implemented.
The Board suggested changing "will be available" to "may be available" in VII(A).
There was significant conversation regarding the appeals process. It was determined to move forward with the policy as presented. The policy may be amended in the future.

7. Board Policy 2520 Selection of Instructional Materials and Equipment; Objections and Requests for Reconsideration

The Rule Development Workshop was the first opportunity for the public to make comments.
Jane Cline, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Leading and Learning, provided the purpose of the revisions to policy 2520.
Chairman Descovich asked if anyone had come to address Board Policy 2520 Selection of Instructional Materials and Equipment Objections and Requests for Reconsideration.
Hamilton Boone was present and made comments and suggestions.
There were no other speakers present.
8. Board Policy 8406 Report of Suspicious Activity and Potential Threats to Schools, Facilities, Students and Employees

Robin Novelli, Chief Operating Officer, outlined the purpose of the policy. Chairman Descovich then called for anyone wishing to address policy 8406, Report of Suspicious Activity and Potential Threats to Schools.
There were no speakers present.
9. Board Policy 8407 Safe School Officers

Mr. Novelli outlined the purpose of policy 8407.
- Delete "including charter schools" at the end of the first sentence in A(1)
- Change the word "facilitate" to "support" in the second sentence of A(1)
- Change the word "and" to "or" at the end of D(1)
