06-09-2015 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #30

Title II, Part A: Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting Fund

The purpose of the Title II, Part A: Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting Fund is to provide grants to State educational agencies, local educational agencies, State agencies for higher education, and eligible partnerships in order to (1) increase student academic achievement through strategies such as improving teacher and principal quality and increasing the number of highly qualified teachers in the classroom and highly qualified principals and assistant principals in schools; and (2) hold local educational agencies and schools accountable for improvements in student academic achievement.

Brevard's Title II, Part A application aligns with the intent of the program by supporting teacher and principal training in state content standards, which correlates with the district strategic imperatives designed to deliver scientifically based research programs in an effort to contribute to closing the achievement gap. Major activities include providing professional development opportunities for teachers and principals in all core academic areas and leadership training to improve student achievement.

In order to expedite the receipt of these entitlement funds, the application will be signed by the superintendent and mailed to the Florida Department of Education to meet the grant deadline of June 30, 2015. Upon award notification, a "Consent After Information" board agenda item will be submitted for board approval to accept the funding at the subsequent meeting.

A final copy of the Title II, Part A application is available for review in the State and Federal Projects Office after June 30, 2015.

Approve the submission of the Title II, Part A grant application to the Florida Department of Education.
