Title I Part A Grant Application

Discussion

The district application for federal Title I Part A funds is being prepared for on-line submission to the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) by June 30, 2012. A complete copy will be made available as soon as possible after the FDOE releases the application. Final district allocations for Title I have not yet been released. The preliminary allocation for Brevard is $14,697,942.

The cut-off for schools' Title I eligibility for FY2013 will remain at 75% poverty for secondary schools and 55% poverty for elementary schools. No schools will be dropped from the program except Riverview Elementary, which is closing, and South Area Alternative Learning Center, which did not qualify. Apollo Elementary, Croton Elementary, and North Area Alternative Learning Center will become Title I schools for the 2012-13 school year. The focus of the program will continue to be on improving academic achievement, providing prekindergarten services in selected Title I schools, professional development and parent involvement. Teacher salaries will continue to constitute the bulk of the budget. Additional budgeted items include instructional materials and supplies, professional development and parent involvement costs, instructional technology, and the operating expenses of the district Title I office. In accordance with Florida statutory changes governing the Supplemental Education Services (SES) program, approximately $1,206,810 will be set aside for after-school tutoring by private companies at Title I schools. The new statute extends this program to all Title I schools, rather than limiting it to schools in need of improvement as in the past. It also changes the student eligibility requirements for SES tutoring. Final FDOE guidance on implementation of the statute is pending.

Approval of this item will authorize the Superintendent to approve purchase orders of $25,000 or more funded by this grant.

This item is being presented for consent without information in order to meet the application deadline of June 30th.
