06-12-2012 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #28

Title
K-2 Teacher Mathematics Materials-Developing Number Concepts

Discussion

K-2 teachers in Brevard need support in order to afford students the opportunity to attain the  depth of understanding required by the mathematical content found within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  We have provided high-quality professional development through the Math Solutions workshops that were conducted in the summer of 2011 and  throughout the 2011-2012 school-year.

As we implement the CCSS for mathematics and integrate the instructional approach learned through the Math Solutions workshops in K-2 next year, teachers will need additional resource materials to supplement the district-adopted program.  The Developing Number Concepts is a series of books designed to help young children develop the important foundational mathematics concepts.  They will afford teachers the opportunity to continue to enhance their own understanding of how children learn as well as their own content knowledge.

These instructional resources will also enable teachers to meet the wide range of students' needs in their classrooms.  The activities and structure are such that teachers can easily differentiate instruction, thus ensuring success for all students.
