Agenda Item #29

Document Based Question (DBQ)

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English-Language Arts (ELA) require that students read a variety of text types at a higher level of cognitive complexity.  These text types represent differing points of views while including issues and problems that persist over time.

The Document Based Question Project (DBQ Project) format provides background information, questioning techniques, analytical thinking processes, document analysis, and a systematic writing approach to enable students to clarify their thinking.  The systematic analytical process provides a framework to support students in high-level critical thinking.  The rigor that will be required of all students with CCSS in listening, speaking, reading and writing are addressed with DBQ instruction.

All fifth and sixth grade teachers are expected to apply analytical thinking, document analysis and systematic writing approaches in their classrooms. In order to support their efforts, we hope to include DBQs as an integral part of curriculum and instruction for all students.
