Agenda Item #26
Head Start Replacement Grantee - Brevard County, Florida
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is looking for a new grantee to provide a continuation of Head Start program services previously provided by the former grantee, Childcare Association of Brevard County, Inc. The Head Start program requires grantees to provide comprehensive child development services to predominately disadvantaged children and families, with a special focus on helping preschoolers develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school. Head Start promotes school readiness by enhancing the social, cognitive, and emotional development of children, ages three to five, through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. The former grantee (Childcare Association of Brevard County, Inc.) was funded for a total enrollment of 624 children and families. This grant will increase the district's capacity to expand current preschool program offerings.
There is a local education agency required match from state, local or other funding sources. The specific percentage of funds that must be contributed is 20% of the total approved cost of the project. The identified match will not create additional spending from local funds as this requirement will be satisfied through in-kind services and existing budgeted expenses which are not state or federally mandated.
