Agenda Item #25

Title I Part A Grant Application

The district application for federal Title I Part A funds is being prepared for on-line submission to the Florida Department of Education by June 30th. A complete copy will be available as soon as possible after the State releases the final allocation. Preliminary figures indicate approximately level funding in the basic allocation, but with the expected loss of ARRA funds.

Due to the reduction in funding and the increased poverty level for most schools, it was necessary to raise the Title I cut-off from 45% to 55%. The number of eligible schools above 55% poverty has increased to 36, comprising 27 elementary schools, 4 alternative sites, and 5 charter schools. Title I will also serve approximately 17 private schools. The program will continue to provide the following services:

  • Academic support for struggling students
  • Prekindergarten units in selected Title I public schools
  • Professional development for teachers to ensure high quality classroom instruction
  • Parent involvement activities to increase parents' capacity to support their children's learning
  • Required supplemental funding for services to homeless students and students in facilities for neglected and delinquent children

Teacher salaries and benefits will continue to constitute the bulk of the budget. Additional budgeted items include instructional support materials, professional development and parent involvement costs, a limited amount for replacement of computers and other equipment, and the operating expenses of the district Title I office. Since the reauthorization of NCLB has not passed, the requirement to set aside 20% of the Title I allocation for Supplemental Education Services (SES) and school choice is still in effect.

Approve the district's application for federal Title I Part A funds.
