Enhanced Instructional Opportunities for Recently Arrived Immigrant Children and Youth Grant (Immigrant Children/Youth Grant)

The Florida Department of Education defines immigrant students based on the following criteria: must be between the ages of 3 and 21, must not be born in the United States, must not have attended school for more than 3 full academic years in any U.S. state. Under these guidelines military children and adopted children born abroad qualify. This grant is provided to districts if current year FTE shows a significant increase from the average of the 2 previous fiscal years. FTE for 2016 reflects 849 immigrant students, an increase of 62% (323 students) from the previous two school years. The purpose of the Immigrant Children and Youth Grant is to assist eligible districts that experience significant increases in immigrant children and youth. Through the grant, districts are to provide high quality supplemental support to such youth, help with their transition into American society, and assist them into meeting the same challenging academic content and achievement standards as all children are expected to meet. Additional support will be provided through supplemental instructional materials, parent reference materials, summer enrichment and supplies, and professional development for instructional staff and administrators.
