Agenda Item #16
Job Descriptions - Brevard After School
Brevard After School has been challenged this year with finding enough qualified candidates to fill many of the position for the after school programs. In order to meet the growing need of these programs, it became a priority this year to implement strategies to increase the capacity of the employee pool.
Online training modules through the Brevard Collaborative Academy will provide professional development opportunities. The implementation of this online training allows employees to take training from a computer workstation during their regular contracted hours rather than traveling distances across the state on Saturday’s. The cost for a new employee to meet the hiring qualification is reduced from $179.00 to $50.00 for each newly hired employee through this program.
All existing staff will be grandfathered without need for further training. However, existing staff who wish to incorporate upward movement in their career will be required to complete the new training. All training will be available and offered to all staff at no cost to the employee and during their regular contracted worktime. The complete training program is a three year progressive plan that culminates in a School Age Certificate leading to a more qualified staff supervising children.
In order to open the field and increase the capacity for qualified candidates, the requirement for a high school diploma has been changed to “preferred” for the Group Leader I position. This will provide opportunities to current BPS employees who may work in other career fields that have experience working with children.
The creation of three new positions: Group Leader II, Activity Leader I, and Activity Leader II will allow for promotional opportunities within the career ladder and offer a retention component to meet our goal of keeping highly effective employees.
Other positions have only minor revisions in qualifications to accurately align within the new career path.
Recommend approval of the Brevard After School career alignment plan.
