06-16-2009 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #52

Title
Agreement with Delaware North for Continuation of 7th Grade BLAST

Discussion
BLAST (Brevard Learns About Science & Technology) is a partnership between the District, Delaware North (the operator of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex) and NASA.  It is a continuation of a contract for services for all Brevard County Public School 7th grade students.  BLAST empowers teams of students to conduct a simulated space mission, experience astronaut training simulators, participate in interactive science activities, and learn about the history of human space exploration.  All 7th grade science teachers receive BLAST update training prior to the start of each new school year, and all new 7th grade science teachers receive in-depth BLAST training.  In addition to providing a quality learning experience for our 7th grade students, our partnership with KSC has enabled the doors to remain open on a unique local educational facility.

Recommendation
Approve the contract for services for the continuation of the BLAST program in the amount of $262,627.00.
