Agenda Item #46
2008-09 School Resource Officer Agreements
Annually the district contracts with nine law enforcement agencies to provide School Resource Officers (SROs) in all secondary schools and a significant number of elementary schools. This year due to significant funding reductions necessitating budget cuts throughout the district the recommendation was brought before the Board on May 27, 2008 to eliminate the elementary school resource officer component of the School Resource Officer Program at a cost saving of $342,000.00. This original proposal has been revised to restore the Program to full capacity to include SROs serving in high, middle and elementary schools.
During the 2008-09 school year, the District will continue to utilize the unilateral reimbursements formula negotiated and agreed upon by consensus in April 2008 with the law enforcement agencies during the 2007-2008 contract negotiations. The District will pay a unilateral reimbursement amount of $28,500 for each SRO during the 2008-09 190 day contractual period.
Approve the School Resource Officer contracts that provide for a unilateral reimbursement cost of $28,500 per SRO for the 2008-09 school year with the following law enforcement agencies: Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Palm Bay, Rockledge, Satellite Beach, Titusville, and West Melbourne Police Departments. A total of 40 SROs will serve 14 high schools and 13 middle schools and 28 elementary schools.
