Agenda Item #14
School Year Calendar Standards and the 2012-2013 School Year Calendar
Veterans' Day has been identified as a federal holiday. As such, it will become a holiday for all in the districts' school year calendar. When November 11 falls on a Saturday, the holiday for all will be on Friday, November 10; and when it falls on a Sunday, the holiday for all will be on Monday, November 12.
Since this change will reduce the school year calendar by one student day, Thursday, December 20 has been changed from the first day of Winter Vacation to the end of the first semester. The first day of Winter Vacation will be December 21, 2012.
Since a teacher/student holiday has been changed to a holiday for all, Good Friday, which traditionally has been a holiday for all, will now become a teacher/student holiday.
Section V.A.2. of the School Year Calendar Standards will have to be revised so that Veterans' Day is treated the same as other holidays - i.e., Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Independence Day.
Approve the revisions to the School Year Calendar Standards and approve the revised 2012-2013 school year calendar.
