Agenda Item #20

Title
Two Trainings -Strategies for Understanding and Enhancing the Communicative Competency in Children with Severe and Multiple Disabilities

Discussion
Due to significant time constraints, this  item is submitted for approval without prior submission as an information item. These two trainings are aligned with the goal of the National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) grant, as well as the Access to the Common Core for Exceptional Student Success (ACCESS) grant, to provide students with communicative competency that will support the teaching and learning of Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Access Points and the Common Core State Standards for students with a significant cognitive disability. Mr. Philip Schweigert is the co-investigator and author of the Communication Matrix, which is used throughout the United States to identify modes of communication for students functioning at the prelinguistic level. He is the sole trainer for this research-based assessment and teaching instrument. This process was identified in the NCSC "Communication Points" newsletter as a recommended system. Mr. Schweigert previously provided trainings in Florida supported by the Florida Department of Education Outreach grant. Mr. Schweigert will deliver two 2-day trainings at the Florida Hotel and Conference Center in Orlando, Florida. The first training will take place on July 17 and 18, 2012 and will be delivered to 50 National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) Community of Practice members from across the state of Florida. The second training will be held on July 19 and 20, 2012 and will provide instruction to 50 Exceptional Student Education pre-kindergarten teachers and therapists from across the state of Florida. Costs include: $1000 per day x 4 days; preparation - $200 and estimated travel reimbursement - $900 for a total of $5,100.
