07-11-2017 School Board Meeting


The School Board of Brevard County, Florida met for its regular board meeting on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida. Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Eagle newspaper on Thursday, June 29, 2017. The affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

  • Thanked Coastal Mechanical for offering apprenticeships to three BPS students as well as the Home Builders and Contractors Association for working with Janice Scholz to form partnerships for the construction schools and to offer apprenticeships to our students.

John Craig

  • Recognized the Army JROTC academic team from Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High for taking first place in the international competition against U.S. army JROTC programs from around the world.

  • Proud of BPS being named an 'A' district.

Accept the reappointment of Yolonda Smith McGriff as Assistant Principal (12 month) at Johnson Middle School for the 2017-18 School year, effective July 1, 2017.

Accept the resignation of Jennifer T. Dames from the position of Assistant Principal at Jackson Middle School, effective July 31, 2017.

The reclassification/transfer of Bradley A. The reclassification/transfer of Stephanie M. The reclassification/transfer of Thomas A. The reclassification/transfer of Frank Marcyan from the position of Teacher on Assignment at Palm Bay Magnet High School to the position of Assistant Principal (10 month) at Jefferson Middle School, on annual contract, effective August 3, 2017. Annual salary based on grade 23 of the Nonbargaining Salary Administration Program.

 

The reclassification/transfer of Megan J. Keen from the position of Guidance Services Professional at Stone Magnet Middle School to the position of Assistant Principal (10 month) at Merritt Island High School, on annual contract, effective August 3, 2017. Minutes: 

Mr. Susin pulled this item.  He had concerns about one of the buildings scheduled for demolition when the building itself is in good shape.  The problem is the way the water runs off the top and the grade of the driveway makes it come back into the building.

Sue Hann, director of Project and Planning Management, provided some information on the project and said they would look at his concern.

Minutes: 

A question was brought up whether or not we had a moral obligation to notify Eastern Florida State College whether or not an employee who has been placed on administrative leave due to allegations of improper behavior with the district. However, this employee works at the college and may have contact with our student during dual enrollment classes.

There was conversation between legal and the Board.

Mr. Susin shared some concerns that homeschool groups are having with newly established requirements.  General Counsel Envall will review and get back with the Board.  

 


L. Superintendent's Report
38. Budget Update Presentation

Minutes: 

Pennie Zuercher, chief financial officer, provided some updated information regarding the 2017-2018 budget.

Board members had questions about moving the Federally Connected monies to general revenue rather than capital. 

There was also a  question about undesignated discretionary lottery money and Ms. Zuercher was asked to explain the E-rate reimbursement.

There was a question about why Federally Connected dollars were not being utilized.
