Agenda Item #11
Field Trip - Astronaut High School Band Performance Tour to Washington, D.C.
The Astronaut High School Band is requesting approval to conduct a performance-based field trip to Washington, D.C. on April 6-10, 2017. This tour will require students to miss one day of school, Friday, April 7, 2017, during which time there are no testing or AP exams scheduled for Brevard Public Schools. The students will perform at a clinic on Friday, April 7th, in the Washington, D.C. area. Students will be required to complete any missed work in advance of the trip. In order to minimize absences to only one school day, the group will leave after school on Thursday, April 6th and will return at 7:00 a.m. on April 10th, which is the first day of Spring Break.
Approximately 80 students, one band director, three BPS employees, and seven A+ volunteers plan to charter motor coaches to Washington, D.C, and will be transported to different sites while there. The tour is being planned and executed by Bob Rogers Travel, Inc. All participants will stay at a five star hotel in the Washington, D.C. area for two nights and will conduct public band performances at the Lincoln Memorial and at an Armed Forces retirement home. Further, the tour includes visits to the Smithsonian museums, the White House, Valley Forge and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. During this trip, students will be monitored by designated A+ level chaperones. Each chaperone will be assigned a group of eight students. During the night, security sweeps will be conducted on each floor. The travel company will arrange for the hotel to house male and female students on separate floors.
The band's performances and clinics will allow students the chance to evaluate their live performance (MU.912.C.2.2, MU.912.F.3.3, MAFS.K12.MP.6.1, MU.912.O.3.2DA.912.S.2.1, MU.912.S.2.2, MU.912.S.3.5) and prepare for the performance as a team (DA.912.F.3.8, MU.912.F.3.1, MU.912.F.3.4, MU.912.S.3.1). Students will also have the opportunity to witness other student bands performing in the area (MU.912.C.3.1, MU.912.O.3.1, DA.912.S.2.1) and evaluate other school's performances and discuss the cultural differences of their community with ours and how that effects performances (MU.912.H.1.1, MU.912.H.2.2, DA.912.S.2.1). This will provide the students valuable education and experience in performing in public and will further their resolve to pursue a collegiate career in music, as well as expose them to the music history and culture of Washington, D.C. (MU.912.H.1.1, MU.912.H.2.2). This tour enhances learning by students' performing outside of Brevard County and the state of Florida allowing them to be exposed to a different interpretation of literature and cultural effects on music in the classroom. In addition, the trip to the nation's capital will support all of the standards in the history curricula.
The anticipated cost per person is $619/quad occupancy as listed on the attached proposals. This price includes motor coach transportation, hotel, tickets for venues, meals as stated in attached itinerary, as well as a tour operator from Bob Rogers Travel who will be present to ensure the trip goes smoothly. Fundraisers will be conducted throughout the 2016-17 school year to allow students to offset the cost. In addition, the band program will use a sponsorship program that will allow local businesses and patrons to contribute. There will be no cost to the district.
Approve the request for the Astronaut High School Band to perform in Washington, D.C. on April 6 through April 10, 2017.
