Heritage High School's Lady Panther Girls' Varsity Basketball team has been invited to participate in the 2016 Title IX Conference basketball tournament from December 27-30 in Washington, D.C. Teams from all over the country are invited to compete in three games during the tournament dates.

Twelve student athletes, four coaches and two parent chaperones/volunteers will depart Orlando Airport for Washington, D.C. on December 27, and will return on December 31, 2016.  Parents will transport the group to and from the Orlando Airport; and during their stay in Washington, D.C., the team's mode of transportation will be via two rental vans.

Every athlete will be responsible to raise $600 to pay for the trip. Fundraisers such as the summer league basketball and car washes will help offset costs of the per player fee. The team will also seek donations from family/friends and a gofundme.com team account. There will be no cost to the district.

Student athletes, coaches and chaperones will stay at the Washington Hilton while in the D.C. area. Proper procedures will be in place to ensure the safety of all student athletes.  There will be one female chaperone staying in each of the four rooms with the girls. Two of the chaperones are female coaches on our coaching staff and the other two chaperones will be parents who are A+ chaperones/volunteers as certified by Brevard County Public Schools.

The website with all supporting information regarding the Sankofa Project is www.TitleIXClassic.com. Not only will the team be participating in basketball games, but the team will be afforded the opportunity to tour the Capitol Building, the White House, the Monument Mall, museums, an NBA game, and possibly the FBI building. In addition, students and coaches will participate in a companion conference where they will learn about Title IX and be empowered to self-advocate by professionals in the areas of sports, STEAM, careers, leadership, public speaking, financial literacy, community citizenship, and civics.
