Agenda Item #14
Zoo School Staffing Contract
The district will have three Title I elementary schools (Cambridge, Dr. W.J. Creel, and Endeavour) participating in the Zoo School program during the 2011-2012 school year. This program allows fifth grade students to spend several weeks during the school year attending classes at the Brevard Zoo, during which time activities based on the Zoo's programs and inhabitants are added to enhance the regular curriculum. The Title I program has been providing three full-time Instructional Assistants each year to work with the schools' fifth grade teachers at the Zoo School. This additional staffing has provided instructional support and student supervision necessary for the enhanced curriculum and activities outside the classroom environment. Under the terms of the proposed contract, the East Coast Zoological Society of Florida, Inc., which operates Brevard Zoo, will assume responsibility for hiring, overseeing and evaluating the three Instructional Assistants at an annual cost of $60,000. This will remove the three positions from the district Title I payroll for a cost savings of $15,000 annually. District staff will continue to provide training in fifth grade science standards for new Instructional Assistants, while the East Coast Zoological Society will provide additional training in the specific activities and procedures of the Zoo School program.
The proposed contract covers a three-year period with annual renewals. It has been approved by district counsel.
Approve the contract with East Coast Zoological Society of Florida, Inc., for staffing of the Zoo School program.
