08-10-10 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #29

Title
Bayside High School Band and Orchestra Field Trip to Boston, Massachusetts

Discussion

The Bayside High School Band and Orchestra are requesting Board approval to conduct a performance based field trip to Boston, Massachusetts, on March 24-27, 2011.  The trip will be planned through Heritage Festivals.

Approximately 75 students and at least 8 chaperones plan to fly from Orlando to Boston on March 24, 2011, and then be transported to the different sites by charter buses.  Students will stay in a hotel sponsored by Heritage Festivals.  The students will have an opportunity to perform in front of three world class judges for comments and then participate in an on-stage clinic.  Students will also be given the opportunity to listen to different school ensembles from various states.  The students will attend a Boston Symphony Orchestra or a Boston Pops performance as well as visit various historical sites in Boston.  The group will return to Orlando on Sunday, March 27, 2011.  The students will miss two days of school (March 24-25).

The anticipated cost per student and chaperone is $890 per person.  This amount includes the hotel, airline transportation, charter bus transportation in the Boston area, sightseeing/tours, concert tickets and meals.  Students will need to bring extra money for meals that are not included and souvenirs.  Because of the cost of this trip, the band and orchestra students will be provided with many opportunities for fundraising.  General fundraisers such as car washes, lanyard sales and concert proceeds will aid students and chaperones to offset the possible increase of fuel and/or airline ticket costs.  This will ensure that students are only responsible for the initial $890 and will not have to make up for the ever changing economy.  Student specific fundraisers such as Honey Baked Ham gift card sales, chocolate bar sales, candy sales, and cheesecake sales will give each student and chaperone an opportunity to raise money exclusively for their cost of the trip.
