Agenda Item #22
McKinney-Vento Grant Awards
The purpose for this item is to announce the award of two McKinney-Vento Homeless Education awards per Title X Part C legislation: the competitive award and the ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act) formula award.
The competitive McKinney-Vento award for $45,000 is for year 1 of a three year grant (total $135,000) to provide services and reduce barriers to school attendance for students identified as homeless. This is the first time the District has applied for and received this funding. Approximately 33 of 67 Districts were awarded in this cycle. The approval to write and submit the competitive grant was Board approved at the January 20, 2009 meeting.
The ARRA formula grant of $50,938 is from the stimulus funding to the state for a one year duration. Each district with over 40 students identified as homeless were eligible to receive funds. This award will supplement the competitive McKinney-Vento award to provide services to this student population. Services include case management, school of origin transportation, special needs transportation, academic scholarships, emergency pool for medical, clothing, and summer time for Homeless Liaison.
Both grant awards total $95,938 toward providing services to reduce barriers for homeless students to allow them to enter and remain in school. Award funds will be released to the district after the Florida Department of Education receives the federal funds.
No in kind or cash match is required by Brevard Public Schools.
Approval to accept the McKinney-Vento grant awards in the amount of $95,938.
