08-12-2008 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #40

Title
Contracted Services Agreement between Columbia Elementary and AIMS Education Foundation

Discussion

This math workshop scheduled for October 17, 2008, is designed to provide staff development for Columbia Elementary teachers in grades 2 through 6 and support staff to increase math scores on the FCAT.  The workshop will be conducted by Sharon Kelley of the AIMS Education Foundation.  AIMS will introduce teachers to strategies to get students immersed in hands-on math activities in geometry and data analysis to develop increased math problem solving skills.  Columbia Elementary did not make AYP for the second year and is considered a SINI school which requires funds be spent on staff development.  Title I will be supporting the staff development cost of $3,995 which includes $1,500 worth of teacher materials.  Friday, October 17, 2008, has been designated a building inservice day and student holiday so substitutes will not be necessary.

Teachers will implement presented strategies in the classroom and monitor the effectiveness of strategies using teacher-made tests.  Teachers will share and discuss results at monthly grade level meetings to determine successes and/or strategy modifications.  FCAT results will be analyzed to determine overall effectiveness of the training on data analysis and geometry.
