Agenda Item #18
Letter of Opposition Regarding "Best and Brightest" Incentive
The Florida Legislature set aside $44 million this year to reward highly rated teachers who also had top SAT or ACT scores. Brand new teachers can qualify with their scores alone.
While the Board agrees that teacher pay continues to negatively affect the ability to attract and retain quality instructional staff, the Board believes this method is illogical and does not have a significant impact a teacher's effectiveness in the classroom.
The Board, as a collective, feels those dollars set aside for this incentive program could be better spent helping to encourage teachers to pursue National Board Certification.
Approve the letter of opposition to the Best and Brightest teacher pay incentive to be sent to the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House and the rest of the Brevard Legislative Delegation.
