Agenda Item #6
2015 Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership and Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award
The Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership and the Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award were established in 1988 to recognize exemplary principals and assistant principals for their contributions to their schools and communities. The programs honor principals and assistant principals that have spearheaded initiatives to increase student performance, promote safe learning environments, and establish partnerships with parents and community members. Joining us for the recognition will be Dr. Richard Dunkel, President and Mr. Gary Shiffrin, Executive Director of the Brevard Association of School Administrators, along with Deborah Blair and Meredith Gibson from Community Credit Union who will present each winner with a check from our wonderful and generous school district business partners.
Recognize Brevard Public Schools' winner of the Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership:
Tara Taylor, Principal at Pinewood Elementary School is this year's Principal of the Year. Tara started her teaching career with BPS at Atlantis Elementary in 2002. She became an Assistant Principal at Port Malabar Elementary in 2006, and she was appointed Principal at Pinewood Elementary in 2011. Since becoming Principal, Ms. Taylor has lead the school to high levels of achievement with the philosophy of "reach every child, every day". As a leader, Tara strives to reach every teacher, every day, as she recognizes the impact of her work with teachers on the children they serve.
Her nomination for this award described her work: "Within her principal position at Pinewood she has developed and promoted a school climate that is congenial, professional and focused on professional learning communities. Under her leadership her school continues to be one of the highest performing schools in the district. Ms. Taylor's leadership is highly respected within our district and her teachers, staff, parents and community recognize her persistence, patience and determination in her role as their school leader."
In addition to representing BPS at the state level competition for Florida's Principal of the Year, Tara also will represent the school district for a second consecutive year in the Florida Commissioner's Leadership Academy, serving this year as a trainer/facilitator for principals joining this group for the first time. Congratulations, Tara Taylor!
Recognize Brevard Pubic Schools winner of the Outstanding Assistant Principal Achievement Award:
Jennifer Brockwell, Assistant Principal at Oak Park Elementary School is this year's Assistant Principal of the Year. Jennifer started her career with BPS as a teacher at Challenger 7 Elementary. Jennifer became the Assistant Principal at Challenger 7 in 2011, and she was recently promoted to the position of Principal at Oak Park Elementary. Ms. Brockwell has continued to grow in instructional leadership, holding herself and others to standards of excellence.
Her nomination for this award stated: "Jennifer Brockwell is an exemplary assistant principal with a strong influence on student achievement. Through her leadership in data analysis, face-to-face feedback and follow up based on frequent informal observations, and collegial sharing of best practices, she has led Challenger 7 in a year's time to go from being at the bottom of the VAM list to one of the top schools in the district."
We are confident Jennifer will continue to do great things with the teachers, staff members, and students at Oak Park Elementary. Congratulations, Jennifer Brockwell!
