Field Trip - Johnson Middle School - Sea Camp

Discussion

The Johnson Middle School STAR Program is requesting permission to participate in the Sea Camp Program at Newfound Harbor Marine Institute in Big Pine Key.  This is the 8th time the team has gone to Sea Camp.  The trip is divided into two groups with 8th grade students going from March 16-18, 2015 (approximately 75 to 100 students 5 teachers/administrators and 8 fingerprinted registered parent volunteers) and 7th grade students attending March 18-20, 2015 (approximately 75-100 students, 5 teachers/administrators, and 8 finger-printed registered parent volunteers).  During Sea Camp students are immersed in Marine Biology workshops that include many hands-on activities such as, but not limited to, a boat ride to an ocean reef where students identify marine life and adaptations while snorkeling, visiting the squid dissection lab, Jellyfish Lab, Plankton and Algae Evening labs and learning about Mangrove Ecology where students wade to a nearby island to compare and contrast mangrove species.

All participants will travel by a school board approved transportation vendor.  The per student cost for Sea Camp is $520 which includes meals in the dining hall and lodging in dorm rooms at Sea Camp.  Many fundraisers have been undertaken allowing students the opportunity to raise the entire amount of the trip.  Scholarship opportunities are available for qualified students through teacher generated grants and funds solicited from area businesses and sponsors.  Acknowledging that three days out of school is a significant amount of time, every minute of the time spent on this trip will be used to foster within these high ability students a real world understanding and appreciation of Florida’s marine life.  Funds for this trip will be held in trust.  There will be no cost to the District.



Recommendation
Approve the request for the Johnson Middle School STAR Program including 150-200 students, fingerprinted registered parent volunteers, nine STAR teachers, and an administrator from Johnson to participate in the Sea Camp Field Trip March 16-18, 2015 and March 18-20, 2015.
