Agenda Item #39
Charter School Governing Boards Authorization to Choose Method of Compliance under Section 1006.12, Florida Statutes, Safe-school officers at each public school
Section 1006.12, Florida Statutes, titled Safe-school officers at each public school, provides that "each district school board and school district superintendent shall partner with law enforcement agencies to establish or assign one or more safe school officers at each school facility within the district by implementing any combination of the following options which best meets the needs of the school district." The three options, or combination of options, include the School Resource Officer (SRO) programs, the commission of school safety officers, and/or the participation in the Coach Aaron Feis Guardian Program if such program is established pursuant to Section 30.15, Florida Statutes, to meet the requirement of establishing a safe-school officer. This School Board approved the position of Specialist - Safety and Security on May 22, 2018, as a hybrid option permitted under Section 1006.12, Florida Statutes.
The local charter schools have asked for the School Board's approval to participate in the Coach Aaron Feis Guardian Program and/or any other option or combination of options if their individual Governing Board so decides. The Florida Department of Education clarified this requires board action (see attachment).
This approval shall ONLY apply to charter schools operating under the sponsorship of The School Board of Brevard County, Florida. This SHALL NOT apply to traditional public schools.
Approval for charter schools under The School Board of Brevard County, Florida, as the Local Education Agency (LEA), to allow their respective Governing Boards to determine the method by which each charter school will meet the statutory requirements contained in Section 1006.12, Florida Statutes.
