Agenda Item #24
Merritt Island High School's Wrestling Team's Field Trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina - December 29-31, 2016
The Merritt Island High School wrestling team is planning to travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina, to compete in the Seahawk Duals wrestling tournament hosted by Hilton Head High School. Dates of the trip will be December 29 through December 31, 2016. Since the trip will take place during winter break, students will not miss any school days.
Approximately 14 students will participate in the event and they will be chaperoned by three district employees (two teachers and one paid assistant coach). Several parents will also attend as spectators. The group will travel by automobile to Hilton Head, SC. Wrestlers will ride in an Avis rental van with the team. The team's head coach will drive the van, and he is licensed and insured as required by the district. The group will be housed at the Marriott Hotel on Hilton Head Island, SC. Students will be eating at the hotel, event concessions, or nearby restaurants.
This trip will help wrestlers be seen by college coaches and scouts from around the country, as well as help them grow as a team and experience a unique setting. While there, the team will sightsee around Hilton Head Island. Many of the athletes have not traveled outside the state of Florida. This experience will be something that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
The total cost of the trip will be approximately $1250 (approximately $90 per student).
All funds will be raised through Merritt Island High School's annual Black and Gold meet ticket sales. There will be no cost to the district.
