09-22-2015 Special School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #6

Title
Florida Arts Model Schools (FAMS) Awards

Discussion

The Florida Department of Education supports a complete and comprehensive education that includes dance, music, theatre and visual arts for all Florida Students.  To help achieve this goal, the Florida Department of Education, in partnership with the Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE), seeks to identify strong arts education programs in schools throughout Florida.  The new Florida Arts Model Schools (FAMS) program recognizes schools that offer exemplary programs in any of the four arts disciplines and partners them with rural/under-served schools desiring to either enhance an emerging arts program or implement a new arts program.  Schools can apply for FAMS recognition in one or more arts areas.

Fifteen schools statewide were recognized in June 2015, as Florida Arts Model Schools at the FAAE Leadership Summit.  The FAMS award is a three-year designation.  Six of the fifteen schools are Brevard schools. Five Brevard Schools are receiving this recognition for exemplary music programs: Titusville High School, Satellite High School, Hans C. Andersen Elementary, Apollo Elementary and Saturn Elementary.  Two Brevard schools are receiving this recognition for exemplary visual arts programs: Saturn and Longleaf Elementary Schools.  We are very proud of this distinction and wish to recognize the efforts of the schools, their teachers, administrators and community for their commitment to excellence.
