Agenda Item #12

No Child Left Inside

The Brevard Zoo, which has a range of successful partnerships with Brevard Public Schools from Zoo Explorers to the Back to School Supply Safari,  invites Brevard Public Schools to partner on a new initiative: No Child Left Inside.

The residents of Brevard County are blessed with an abundant access to parks, trails and wild places. Most families live just a few miles from the Indian River Lagoon, the most diverse estuary in the United States. However, children in Brevard County, like children across the country, are spending less time playing outside. There are many factors contributing to this including over-scheduling of planned activities, overworked parents and the rising popularity of electronic media among children of all ages. But regardless of the causes, not playing outside has serious physical and emotional implications for our children.

No Child Left Inside is a national movement afoot to help families spend more quality time in the great outdoors and to encourage children to play outside. Here in Brevard County a coalition of partners, including Brevard Public Schools, Brevard County Parks and Recreation, Florida Today, Health First and Brevard Zoo are invited to work to give families the tools and incentives they need to experience all that outdoor Brevard County has to offer.

Keith Winsten, Executive Director of the Brevard Zoo, will present information regarding the program.
