Agenda Item #23

2011-12 Charter School Applications

Brevard Public Schools received five (5) applications for charter schools to become operational in the 2011 - 2012 school year:

  •   CEDAR Academy (K-2)
  •   Mavericks High School (9-12)
  •   Academy Dell'Arte (9-12)
  •   Odyssey Space Coast Academy (K-8)
  •   Odyssey Charter Academy for Science, Technology, and Environmental Studies (9-12)

In accordance to Section 1002.33(6), Florida Statutes, a sponsor shall by majority vote approve or deny an application no later than sixty (60) days after the application was received by the Office of School Choice on August 2, 2010.

Copies of the charter applications were distributed to the Charter Application Review Team for evaluation.  After completing a thorough review of each charter application, utilizing the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) evaluation instrument, the Review Team met on August 13, 2010 to discuss the proposals.  In addition, the Review Team conducted interviews with four (4) of the five (5) applicants on August 25, 2010.

Subsequent to interviewing applicants, the District asked Academy Dell'Arte, Odyssey Charter Academy, and Odyssey Space Coast Academy to mutually agree to extend the charter application review process for an additional thirty (30) days to provide the Review Team with additional time to evaluate the applications.  The Superintendent will provide the Board with recommendations regarding the approval/denial of these three (3) charter applications at the October 12, 2010 Board Meeting.  CEDAR Academy withdrew its charter application.

The recommendation to the Board is to deny the approval of the Mavericks High School charter application. This recommendation is based on a comprehensive review of the charter application.  The review documentation to support this decision will be provided to Board members prior to the September 14, 2010 Board meeting.
