2013-2014 Student Progression Plan for Brevard Public Schools

Discussion
Below is a copy of changes to the Student Progression Plan. The Student Progression Plan is designed to reflect the legislative requirements impacting student progression for 2013-14. Staff members continue to make changes as new guidance is received. The Florida Department of Education has advised districts of the following changes to student progression requirements:

 

General Section

 

Removed:

  • Information regarding Assessment and Remediation: DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS (s.1008.25(4)(a), F.S.)
  • Information regarding "Progress Monitoring Plan (PMP) (s.1008.25(4)(b), F.S.)

Revised:

  • Include specific reference to Florida Virtual School (FLVS) (s.1002.37 and s.1002.42, FS)

High School Section

 

Removed:

  • Reference to Senior High School Instructional Handbook Information
  • 3-Year 18 credit College and Career Prep information
  • 3 Diploma Designations: Accelerated College Credit Courses Diploma Designation, Industry Certification Diploma Designation and Florida Ready to Work Diploma Designation
  • High School Equivalence Diploma Assistance Exception - no language in statute
  • Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement Instruction - We do not have a joint dual enrollment/AP program.
  • Declaration of Type of Credit - This is not done; we do not have a joint dual enrollment/AP program.
  • Initial and renewal Bright Futures students must submit a complete and error-free Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year, prior to disbursement of their awards. (s.1009.531, F.S.) - deleted from legislation
  • Reporting Requirements: Student Workforce Preparation
  • "Strategies for Exceptional Students to Meet Standard Diploma Requirements" Section
  • "Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Waiver" - section moved to Progression Plan for Students with Disabilities
  • Level 1 course information in "High School Courses or Programs Excluded from Awarding Credit" Section

Added:

  • State Accelerated 3-Year 18 Credit Graduation Option
  • Scholar Diploma Designation and Merit Diploma Designation
  • Updating 26-Credit Graduation Requirement
  • Changes to "Learning Opportunities for Out-of-State and Out-of-County Transfer Students Needing Additional Instruction to Meet High School Graduation Requirements: to reflect updated legislative language

Exceptional Student Education Section

 

Removed:

  • Special Diploma Option 1 and Option 2 - removed Performing Fine Arts credit requirement and replaced with Transition Planning course. Removed all reference to Life Management and Self Determination courses
  • Special Diploma Option 2 - Removed mastery of employment and community competencies
  • reference of modifying state and district-wide test procedures and other evaluation procedures

In compliance with Section 1008.25 et al. of the Florida Statutes, the School Board must adopt a plan for student progression in Brevard Public Schools. The plan must be updated or revised annually to incorporate locally proposed changes mandated by Florida Statute or State Board of Education Rule.

 

A copy of the Student Progression Plan will be available for review in the School Board Office, as well as in all offices in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction.



Recommendation

Approve the 2013-2014 Student Progression Plan for Brevard Public Schools.
