Disability History and Awareness Instruction Weeks
The 2008 Legislature created Section 1003.4205, Florida Statute, Disability History and Awareness Instruction. Based on this Statute, school districts are to encourage disability history and awareness instruction in all K-12 public schools during the first two weeks in October. The goals of Disability History and Awareness Instruction are: 1) to develop better treatment of individuals with disabilities in society (especially youth in schools) and increased awareness to the bullying or harassment of students with disabilities; 2) to provide encouragement to individuals with disabilities to develop self-esteem, gain self-pride, obtain employment after postsecondary education, and contribute to their communities; and 3) to reaffirm the commitment of providing equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Adopt the Resolution declaring October 1 - 11, 2013 as Disability History and Awareness Instruction Weeks".
