10-08-2013 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #14

Title
Florida Department of Health Child Care Food Program

Discussion

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) continues to research new opportunities to feed students of Brevard County.  The Florida Department of Health (FDOH), Bureau of Child Care Food Programs (CCFP) recently announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a streamlined process for school districts interested in offering additional meals and snacks through the CCFP.  Please note that by offering the CCFP, FNS would be able to feed more children outside the normal school day and on weekends which may include:

  • Afternoon snack to Head Start students;
  • Breakfast or lunch and a snack on FCAT Saturdays;
  • Breakfast or lunch and a snack on Harris Super Science Saturdays;
  • Supper at schools in high poverty areas.

The program requirements are similar to that of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs.

A copy of the application is attached for your reference.  Should we be successful in obtaining the grant funding, this item will be brought back to the School Board for acceptance.
