Agenda Item #13
Melbourne Hi Crew Field Trip to Augusta, Georgia, November 11 - 13, 2016
The Melbourne Hi Crew would like to compete in The Head of the South Regatta, hosted by Augusta Rowing Club. This is one of the largest high school rowing competitions in the south. The event will be held along the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia. An itinerary is attached.
The regatta offers many different events for high school crews to compete for various cups and trophies. Events vary by sex, age, weight category, number of rowers, and style of rowing (sweeping with one oar per rower or sculling with two oars per rower). Competitors will experience both the spirit of rowing competition, as well as the physical challenge of putting themselves against the very finest crews rowing at the high school level. Participation will build team work, as well as help these rowers develop into ideal scholar athletes. This event may give students the opportunity to row for a college team, as well as continue to discover their success throughout their rowing program at Melbourne High School.
Approximately 30 - 40 students, one school board employee, and nine chaperones (to include crew coaches) will travel to Augusta. Students will travel in private vehicles with chaperones or possibly by bus if there are enough rowers to justify the cost. All drivers have a valid Florida Driver's License, have completed a Statement of Insurance on Private Vehicles form, and have completed a Level II background screening. Drivers will use appropriate vehicles per Board Policy 8660. The team will depart from Melbourne High School on November 11, 2016 and return on November 13. November 11 is a holiday, so no school days will be missed.
Students and chaperones will stay at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Augusta, 1049 Stevens Creek Road, Augusta, GA 30907, for two nights. The estimated per student cost for the trip is $200.00. Monies will be raised through donations, fundraisers (percentage of sales from 5-Guys), or will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian of the rower. Chaperones will pay for their own meals and lodging. The Melbourne Hi Crew assumes all responsibility for the costs. There will be no cost to the district.
