Agenda Item #11
Heritage High School Marching Band Field Trip to Winston-Salem State University, NC, October 13-16, 2016
Dr. John Harris, Principal of Heritage High School, received a letter dated September 8, 2016 from Dr. Michael Magruder, Director of Bands and Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Winston-Salem University, inviting the Heritage High School Marching Band to participate in the Winston-Salem State University 2016 Homecoming events. Due to time constraints, this agenda item is being submitted only one time for consent without prior information.
The group (112 students and 14 adult chaperones) will travel to Winston-Salem University (WSSU) in North Carolina to participate in their homecoming parade, scholarship auditions, a post-game field performance, and a campus tour. Dr. Michael Magruder has expressed that if the Heritage High School band is able to accept the invitation, he will personally extend scholarship opportunities to all seniors in attendance. Seniors will be given an opportunity to play for Dr. Magruder post-game and also individually during a "meet and greet session" with WSSU's Marching Band. Dr. Magruder will also hear non-seniors play for him to initiate an on-going recruitment relationship. During last year's trip a former Heritage High School band student received a $58,000 scholarship to attend Winston-Salem University. Upon listening to each senior perform with the marching band and individually, Dr. Magruder will offer up to the maximum marching band scholarships to all interested seniors in the amount of $13,000 per year ($6,500 per semester).
The per-person cost of the trip will be $300. (A breakdown of costs is shown below).
Total - $36,500
Because not all students are able to afford the cost of the trip, a scholarship program has been put into place to cover the cost for students needing financial assistance. Four car washes, a barbeque plate sale, fish plate sale, and Texas Road House Roll fundraiser have been scheduled.
There will be at least one chaperone for every 10 students (seven Brevard Public Schools employees and seven A+ parent volunteers/ chaperones). Students and chaperones will be depart on October 13 at 10:00 p.m. via three Dynamic Tours charter buses and will return on October 16 at approximately 10:30 p.m. (Itinerary attached.) Lodging for the nights of October 14 and 15 will be at the LaQuinta Inn, 2020 Griffith Road, Winston-Salem, NC. Students will be required to stay with their assigned chaperone at all times. Periodic room checks will be conducted throughout the night to insure the safety and wellbeing of each student. Students will miss one day of school (Friday, October, 14).
