Strategies for Understanding and Enhancing the Communicative Competency in Children with Severe and Multiple Disabilities
Due to the significant time restraints, this item is submitted for approval without prior submission as an information item.
We are requesting approval for Mr. Philip Schweigert to deliver three (3) trainings that are aligned with the goal of the NCSC grant, as well as the Access to the Common Core for Exceptional Student Success (ACCESS) grant, to provide students with communicative competency that will support the teaching and learning of Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Access Points and the Common Core State Standards for students with a significant cognitive disability.
Mr. Schweigert is the co-investigator and author of the Communication Matrix that is used throughout the United States to identify modes of communication for students functioning at the prelinguistic level. He is the sole trainer for this research-based assessment and teaching instrument. This process was identified in the National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) "Communication Points" newsletter as a recommended system. Mr. Schweigert has previously trained in Florida, supported by the Florida Department of Education Outreach grant. Mr. Schweigert was previously approved by the School Board of Brevard County to conduct two sessions of the same training last July.
These additional trainings will take place in Orlando on November 12-13, 2012, in Ft. Lauderdale on November 15-16, and in Tallahassee on November 19-20, 2012 and will target the following individuals.
1) National Center and State Collaborative (NCSC) Community of Practice members from across the state of
2) Teachers and administrators from Exceptional Student Education center schools from across the state of Florida
who work with students with a significant cognitive disability.
Trainer: 1,000 dollars per day x 6
Preparation: 200 dollars
Estimated travel reimbursement: 2,700 dollars
