Approve School Improvement Plans for 2009-2010

Discussion

The School Improvement Plans (SIPS) being submitted for approval are from 90 schools including the alternative school sites.  Each public school in Florida is required to complete and submit a School Improvement Plan annually under Florida Statute [1001.42 (18) (a) ].

This year, in order to better align SIPs with the District's Strategic Plan, the Office of Testing, Accountability and Evaluation, in conjunction with Educational Technology, developed an on-line template for schools that are not under state or federal sanctions.  Sanctioned schools are required to complete the Department of Education (DOE) template as done in previous years.  For the 2009-2010 school year, 23 schools completed the DOE on-line template, while the remaining 67 schools completed the newly-created district template.  Both templates meet the requirement of the DOE.

The process for completing SIPS includes conducting needs assessments based on data available from the previous year.  These include, but are not limited to assessment, attendance, discipline and survey data; components that make up Florida's School Grade and the NCLB Adequate Yearly Progress.

The schools then utilize this data to identify school goals and write specific measurable objectives and strategies that will be implemented to accomplish the objectives for the current academic year.  A delineation of professional development to support the successful attainment of strategies and goals is also encompassed in these plans.

The goals that are to be addressed by all Brevard County Schools include reading, math, writing, science, parental involvement, attendance and technology. Secondary schools are also required to address a goal and objective on three objectives addressing Secondary Schools of National Prominence (SSNP) as well as Graduation/Drop-out prevention.

Schools on the attached list are being submitted for approval.

The plans will serve as the primary communication tool with parents, faculty, and community regarding the school academic focus for the 2009-2010 school year.  The document will also be reviewed and approved by each School Advisory Council.

Florida Statute 1001.42 (18) (a) states that the School Board will annually approve new, amended, or continued School Improvement Plans.  Each school receives $5.00 per FTE based on the current year's enrollment.  The funds are to be used in the implementation of the identified strategies of the School Improvement Plan.  To date, these funds have not been allocated by the DOE for the 2009-2010 school year due to budgetary concerns.

A copy of the School Improvement Plan for each school and alternative school sites is on file in the Office of School Improvement, in the Office of Testing, Accountability, and Evaluation.  SIPs are also available on-line on each school's website and on the District website at http://accountabilityandtesting.brevardschools.org/SIP/default.aspx.
