2015-2016 Student Progression Plan for Brevard Public Schools
In compliance with Section 1008.25 et al. of the Florida Statutes, the School Board must adopt a plan for student progression in Brevard Public Schools. The plan must be updated or revised periodically to incorporate locally proposed changes mandated by Florida Statute or State Board of Education rule.
Below is a copy of changes to Brevard Public Schools' Student Progression Plan. The Student Progression Plan is designed to reflect the legislative requirements impacting student progression for 2015-2016. Staff members continue to make changes as new guidance is received. The Florida Department of Education has advised districts of the following changes to student progression requirements.
- Good Cause Exemption language for sixth grade students (requirement to use Middle Grades Promotion criteria)
- Reference to FSA on the Good Cause Exemption options for grades 4 and 5
Removed: State requirement of remediation of students with Level 1 and Level 2 scores on statewide English Language Arts and mathematics statewide assessments
Added: To comply with HB 7069 which stated: "Each student must participate in the statewide standardized assessment program required by S.1008.22. Each student who does not achieve a level 3 or above on the statewide, standardized English Language Arts assessment must be evaluated to determined the nature of the student's difficulty, the area of academic need, and strategies for providing academic supports to improve the student's performance." required placement of qualified students in the Intensive Language Arts class. - Page 42
Revised: Promotion to 9th Grade section regarding the Career and Education planning course to specify teachers who teach the course, to list the approved Career Planning course (9100110) to be taught at Brevard Public Schools and to clarify reasons for the use of an alternative career planning course. - Page 41
- Required remediation of students with Level 1 and Level 2 scores on statewide English Language Arts and mathematics statewide assessments.
- Requirement of high schools to evaluate before the beginning of grade 12 the college readiness of each student who scores level 2 or 3 on the grade 10 FCAT Reading and/or Level 2, 3, or 4 on the Algebra 1 assessment and the requirement that students with any identified deficiencies to complete appropriate postsecondary preparation instruction before high school graduation
- Requirement to pass the Grade 11 English/Language Arts (ELS) Assessment in order to satisfy the scholar diploma designation requirements.
- Basic Education Course Substitutions - no longer in statute

A copy of the Student Progression Plan will be available in the School Board District Office, as well as in all offices in Curriculum and Instruction.
Hold a public hearing and approve the Brevard Public Schools' Student Progression Plan for 2015-2016.
