Agenda Item #39
Revisions on School Board Policies 1420 and 4420 (Benefits)
During the 2009 legislative session there was a change related to paid legal holidays, prior to SB 1676 the "six paid legal holidays" related only to 196-day contracted teachers. Based on that and on the fact the law was silent on the number of paid holidays for 11 and 12-month employees, districts have provided through policy and through collective bargaining additional days for those employees. Because the amended law struck "196", the law appears to now apply to all contract lengths. The new law says in part, "District School Boards may authorize a maximum of six paid legal holidays..." It does not prohibit additional days. Therefore, the policy language for Policies 1420 and 4420 will be amended to include "and annual leave days". These days will be the day following Thanksgiving Day, the day preceding Christmas Day, the day following Christmas Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and April 2, 2010. The affected employee groups are those with Local 1010 and nonbargaining.
Approve the revisions to Board Policies 1420 Benefits, Section I. Holidays and 4420 Benefits, Section I. Holidays.
