Field Trip - Cocoa High School FIRST Robotics - FIRST Connecticut Regional in Hartford, CT and FIRST World Championship in Atlanta, GA

Discussion

The Robotics Team is planning to attend the FIRST Connecticut Regional in Hartford, Connecticut.  The eight adult chaperones are both male and female. Two (2) chaperones are current Brevard Public Schools employees, three (3) are engineer mentors from NASA Launch Services/Analex Corporation who are properly fingerprinted with the district and three (3) are parent/mentor chaperones who are properly fingerprinted with the district.  The team will travel by air leaving from the Orlando International Airport and then rent vans or a charter bus to travel to/from competition.  The team will be staying at a FIRST authorized hotel closest to the event.  Students will be either walking or taking the rental vans/charter bus from the hotel to the Connecticut Convention Center. 

The Robotics Team also plans to attend the FIRST World Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.  The team will travel by charter bus.  The team will be staying at a FIRST authorized hotel closest to the event.  Students will be either walking or taking the charter bus or rental vans from the hotel to the Georgia Dome.

Students will take a walking tour of the University of Connecticut Engineering Department and participating in the Connecticut College Fair (Connecticut Regional) and the Georgia Tech Engineering Department (World Championships) with a representative from the school(s).  Both trips will be funded by various fundraisers and business partners including Analex Corporation, NASA Launch Services, Brevard Public Schools and Gov. Connection.  THERE WILL BE NO COST TO THE DISTRICT.



Recommendation

Approve the request for the Cocoa High Robotics Team, approximately 25-30 students and eight chaperones, to attend the FIRST Connecticut Regional in Hartford, Connecticut on March 24-29, 2009.  The students will miss four (4) days of school.

Approve the request for the Cocoa High Robotics Team, approximately 25-30 students and eight chaperones, to attend the FIRST World Championship in Atlanta, Georgia on April 15 - 19, 2009.  The students will miss three (3) days of school.
