Agenda Item #33

Title
School Improvement Grant Application

Discussion

The State is distributing federal Title I School Improvement funds to districts for programs targeting schools identified for improvement under NCLB. Schools included in this application are Cambridge, Coquina, Dr. W. J. Creel, Endeavour, Gardendale, Jupiter, Riverview, Riviera, Turner and University Park Elementary schools.

Funding from this grant will be used primarily to support school improvement initiatives already in place in the schools. These include professional development; curriculum mapping; extended after-school instructional support; parent education programs; summer SOAR; additional personnel for intensive support in reading, math, science and writing; updates of computer-assisted instructional programs; and Data Board implementation.

In order to expedite the receipt of these funds, a preliminary proposal was signed by the Superintendent and submitted to the FLDOE on October 8, 2008. A complete copy of the grant application is available on-line or from the district Title I office.

Recommendation

Approve the district's application for the FY09 School Improvement Grant in the amount of $514,345.
