Approve School Improvement Plans for 2008-2009

Discussion

The School Improvement Plans (SIPS) being submitted for approval are from the 90 schools including the alternative school sites.  Each public school in Florida is required to complete and submit a School Improvement Plan annually under Florida Statute [1001.42 (18) (a) ].  This year all Brevard County schools completed the state developed School Improvement template in conjunction with members of their School Advisory Councils (SAC).

Schools are required to conduct a needs assessment of all data available from the previous year, which includes all assessment, attendance, discipline, survey data, components that make up the state's grading system, and NCLB Adequate Yearly Progress.  Additionally, the SIPs are aligned to the District Strategic Plan and the District's Equity Plan.

The schools are also required to provide teacher and administrator qualifications, research-based curriculum and instructional programs, identify the school goals, and write specific measurable objectives and the strategies that will be implemented to accomplish the objectives for the current academic year.  A delineation of professional development to support the successful attainment of strategies and goals is also encompassed in these plans.

The goals that are to be addressed by all Brevard County Schools include reading, math, writing, science and parental involvement.  This year, all SIPs also include a goal and objective on attendance, technology and three additional objectives addressing Secondary Schools of National Prominence (SSNP).

Schools on the attached list are being submitted for approval.

The plans will serve as the primary communication tool with parents, faculty, and community regarding the school academic focus for the 2008-2009 school year.  The document will also be reviewed and approved by each School Advisory Council.

Florida Statute 1001.42 (18) (a) states that the School Board will annually approve new, amended, or continued School Improvement Plans.  Each school receives $5.00 per FTE based on the current year's enrollment.  The funds are to be used in the implementation of the identified strategies of the School Improvement Plan.  A copy of the School Improvement Plan for each school and alternative school site is on file in the Office of School Improvement, Office of Testing and Accountability, and is available online at the school's website and at the DOE website-http://www.flbsi.org/08-09_sip_template/login.aspx.
